Duck Noodle Soup
No. 21 of my 100 fav things in Cabra.
Duck noodle soup or Mi Vit Tiem (pronounced Mee-yit-dim) is not to be confused with Bun mang vit (Vermicelli and cold duck salad).
A bowl of thin egg noodles and blanched bok choy in a dark broth with a generous serving of tender duck thigh! Smells likes goodness in a bowl!
Bean sprouts are added to taste. In a separate ceramic pot (I love when they open the lid and you get a waft of the soup….dra.ma.tic!) serving of slow cooked whole duck thigh and a piece of neck. This little ceramic pot also features shitake mushroom and goji berries (for vitality! that was my anime moment). This soup is incredible. It just tastes so nourishing. Whenever I have a cold, I get a good bowl of steaming egg noodle duck soup…better than any lemsip.
This restaurant’s soup is truly something. Its fragrant, sweet and wholesome. Just like a good pho, I’d recommend this dish to those who are not keen on raw vegetables or cold dishes ( or have a sensitive stomach, as we all know, IBS affects one in ten australians).
As good as it is here at “Tan Ky”, it is still considered a new kid on the block in Cabra. There are a handful of other restaurants who have been at it for much longer. My all time fav place which also made their own egg noodles by hand has sadly closed down =( R.I.P
……and then there are lonnnnnnng establishments like U.E Noodle who have built a reputation spanning over two decades on this one dish.
You could also get a mean one from Tan Viet who basically has perfected any egg noodle + poultry combination.

Tender piece soft duck immersed in a tasty slow cooked dark broth. Hidden beneath are goji berries and shitake mushrooms. Some claim it has healing properties!
