Flying Foxes

No. 5 of 100

Witness an exodus of native flying foxes in Cabramatta (20 minutes) after sunset. For the best vantage point, go to Cabramatta Flying-fox Reserve  (from Liverpool St) and look for the purpose-built viewing platform.

You can also walk from Cabramatta train station (1km) or from Warwick Farm train station (1.5km) to the same spot.

This colony of Grey headed flying foxes in Cabramatta is one of the few that still exist today.

Why should I?

  • Grey-headed flying-foxes are the third most intelligent animal alive in  the world (after humans and chimpanzees).
  • Grey-headed flying-foxes grow to 23-29cm in body length AND have a WINGSPAN OF UP TO A METRE in length making them Australia’s largest bat species. Imagine a hundred 1 metre sized bats flying over you! Amazing!
  • They are listed as a vulnerable specie.

Interestingly, in 1878 a completely opposing committee called the ‘Flying-fox Destroying Associate’ was established, in response to farmers who found that the cheeky air borne locals were engorging on their precious fruits.
